Spring beckons us to the trails and

gardens!

Our first community garden: Volunteers created the Community Garden of Hope and Peace in 2009. After three successful growing seasons, the garden structures needed repair. Thanks to volunteers and funding from Community Partnership Family Resource Center we are well on the way to restoring the raised beds. A special “thank you” goes to Ron Beyers and Ron Capen for readying the beds for planting.

Garden space available: Space for gardening is available at CGHP and in a couple of Woodland Park backyards. If interested, send a note to email@wpharvestcenter.org to reserve a spot.

May 5: Climate Impacts Day will be observed here in Woodland Park, we’ll gather for a community hike 1:30-4:00pm to the Catamount Reservoir, highlighting the increased risk of forest fire and our depleted water resources. More info.
May 6: This event is sponsored by Amy Willard at the home of Leana & Dennis Wilson in Woodland Park. The new Tower Garden will be introduced and other products from Juice Plus+ will be discussed. To attend this afternoon of “Health & Wellness” please RSVP by Friday, May 4th to: Amy Willard 719.231.7155 AmysHerbals@msn.com

May 12: 2-boot hike of North Catmount Limber Pines Trail led by Nancy Remmler (mtngirl@mywdo.com). Meet at Centennial Trailhead in Woodland Park at 8:00am for car pooling.

May 20: “Raising Poultry in the Mountains” promises to be another very interesting Harvest Center workshop. The presenters will describe their successful techniques for raising chickens and ducks in our high altitude setting. The keynote presenter is Carol Ekarius, author of “Storey’s Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds” and other books about small scale farming.

Gardening in May? Every gardener in this area is asking, “Is it safe to plant outdoors?” We’ve already experienced several days of weather in the 70′s and several more are forecast in the coming week. This is June weather not May weather! Many gardening friends have already planted seeds or will soon transplant cold tolerant veggies such as spinach, chard, lettuce, peas, and broccoli into covered beds. As Kathleen said at our last workshop, “I’m taking advantage of the warm weather and planting now. If the weather turns cold, then I’ll plant again!”

Welcome to the Teller-Park Conservation District web site.

Across the United States, nearly 3000 conservation districts are helping local people to conserve land, water, forests, wildlife and related natural resources. We share a single mission to coordinate assistance from all interested public, private, local, state and federal resources to develop locally driven solutions to natural resource concerns.

In 2011, the District hosted a Landowner Stewardship Workshop, conducted a weed workshop, demonstrated its river riparian trailer & snotel model at several schools and events-including Earth Day, awarded 4 scholarships to local youth to attend Camp Rocky and 2 scholarships to local teachers to attend conservation camps, sold over 5500 lbs. of grass & wildflower seed, monitored and treated over 2,650 acres of weeds in Teller and Park counties.
